Dean writes, teaches and researches from his base in East Yorkshire, England.
Writing
& Research
Dean's research and teaching interests include
film, television and theatre - with particular interest in science fiction, cinema exhibition, Japanese traditional theatre and the history
of space travel. He was first published with a critical monograph,
Star Wars: The Genesis of a Legend. Dean has just finished guest-editing a double issue of the American film journal, Post Script.
He also has a number of other irons in the fire - with articles, essays and plays at various stages. He is currently working towards a TV documentary project on classic movie palaces. Other broadcast scripts and proposals are in development with production companies in the UK and US. Further projects remain available for discussion.
Teaching
Since leaving full-time teaching as a Head of Drama at an independent girls' school in the UK,
Dean has continued to teach theatre, film, drama, creative-writing and
English in a number of universities, colleges and schools. He has worked
with students in the UK and the US, from postgraduate levels through to
primary school - as well as adult learners in 'continuing education'.
His current teaching includes film, creative-writing and TV production courses at The
University of Hull, England.
Other
Activities
In 2003, Dean co-founded media production company, Scene Cinema
Ltd. This company has worked with a number of organisations to develop
media programmes for Degree, BTec and Diploma, as well as courses of study for 'gifted
and talented' students, 'special needs' students, young offenders - and
teachers.
Scene Cinema has produced award-winning boardgames under its imprint Ludorum Games.
In 2010, Scene Cinema acquired the full product and development rights to the Melissi Digital Classroom, which is now used to help teachers to deliver language classes in many countries world-wide, as well as in educational, government and military institutions in the UK.

Background
Dean received his PhD for a doctoral thesis on women in science fiction
film from The University of Hull. This followed a BA(hons) degree in Drama and 3 years as a theatre technician
at Essex University Theatre. He likes gin
and sushi, rides a unicycle a bit and juggles badly.
