Writing
& Research
Dean currently has a number of writing projects underway - scripts for
film, TV, radio and theatre, a book on women in science fiction film,
and various articles, papers and essays. Some broadcast projects have
been optioned and are in development with production companies in the
UK and US. Other projects remain available for discussion.
Research interests include film, TV
and theatre, with particular interest in women in science fiction film,
cinema architecture, Japanese traditional theatre and the history of space
travel. Dean was first published with a critical film analysis, Star
Wars: The Genesis of a Legend.
Teaching
Since leaving full-time teaching as a Head of Drama at a secondary school,
Dean has continued to teach Theatre, Film, Creative Writing, Drama and
English in a number of universities, colleges and schools. He has worked
with students in the UK and the US, from university degree levels through
to primary school - as well as adult learners in 'continuing education'.
His teaching currently includes film and creative writing courses at The
University of Hull, UK.
Other
Activities
In 2003, Dean and fellow writer/teacher, Jim Hawkins formed Scene Cinema
Ltd., taking video production and creative writing skills into education.
Scene Cinema has worked with a number of institutions to develop
Degree, BTec and Diploma programmes, as well as courses of study for 'gifted
and talented' students, 'special needs' students, young offenders - and
teachers.
Scene Cinema has recently acquired
the sales, support and development rights to the Melissi
Digital Classroom system. The company has also published award-winning
board games under its imprint, Ludorum
Games.
Education &
Background
Dean received his PhD for a doctoral thesis on women in science fiction
film from The University of Hull. This followed 3 years as a theatre technician
at Essex University Theatre and a BA(hons) degree in Drama. He likes gin
and sushi, rides a unicycle a bit and juggles badly.
